Pediatric Multi-Specialty teams have been a major part of REI-Vietnam’s medical work since 2002. For many years we’ve sent both a spring and a fall pediatric team, with a focus on Hanoi and Hue, and now extending to Danang. The National Hospital of Pediatrics in Hanoi, Hue Central Hospital and the Hue College of Medicine and Pharmacy have been strategic partners from the beginning, but the list includes other general hospitals in all three of those cities. The pediatric sub-specialties included have been: cardiology, surgery, anesthesiology, pulmonology, dermatology, orthopedics, allergies, immunology, pathology, oncology, ophthalmology, and neonatology. In neonatology we feel partly responsible for an 80% decrease in the infant mortality rate at the National Children’s Hospital in Hanoi since we started working with them. Our pediatrics teams have won acclaim for some high-profile advances in pediatric health care, including: bringing a whole pediatric cardiac surgery team to Hanoi for difficult operations, giving the first heart-lung machine to Hue Central Hospital, operating to separate a conjoined twins and bringing a young boy from near Hue to the U.S. for remedies to the missing femur of one leg.
Austin Raunikar of Greenville, SC, now leads our pediatrics team in the spring. They spend a week in Hanoi and a week between Hue and Danang.
