Nursing Education is the newest speciality getting emphasis at REI-Vietnam. While working in hospitals in the largest cities, we've come to realize that the practice of nursing is very different between our two countries. In general, nurses in Vietnam are not educated to care for patients with the same standards as in the west. They realize this and are asking for our help. Both the doctors and nurses are aware that if nursing was stronger in Vietnam, healthcare would be better for all. We've been asked to improve the quality of nursing education and nursing practice by influencing curriculum developement, teaching practices and faculty development.
Elaine Goehner, PhD, RN, CPHQ, leads our nursing education team through connections established in universities and hospitals in Hanoi, Hue, and Danang.. The focus of the team is to teach and model good nursing in clinical and hospital care. Nurses with multiple roles have participated. Elaine is a professor of nursing at Azusa Pacific University, teaching online. She also currently works at Multicare Health System in Tacoma, Washington as a Patient & Family Education and Health Literacy Specialist. Her husband, Del, is part of our business education team for Vietnam.
